Job Summary
The Food and Nutrition Services Department at Baycrest provides service to clients in the Baycrest Hospital, the Apotex Jewish Home for the Aged, and the Mountainview and Freeman Day Centre. Our vision is to provide safe, appetizing food of optimum nutritional quality to facilitate an enjoyable mealtime experience for patients, residents, staff and visitors in compliance with the Jewish laws of Kashruth. This position is a key and integral part of the resident experience.
Key Responsibilities:
- Performs basic food preparation functions including portioning food accurately and in accordance with production orders
- Performs daily practices utilizing safe and high-quality standards for patients/clients
- Maintains supplies and equipment including the nourishment cart
- Serves clients in a courteous and engaging manner
- Collects of dishes, loads and operates dish machine
- Cleans and sanitize kitchen and dining area
- Adheres to food handling methods according to established standards of sanitation, infection control and safety in accordance with Ministry of Health Long Term Care Standards, The Occupational Health and Safety Act and departmental policies and Kosher Laws
- Serves food to residents according to therapeutic diets and preferences
- May need to lift and carry heavy objects, and to withstand long periods of walking, standing and frequent bending and twisting
- May need to steer and manipulate large and small food wagons through congested areas
- Participates in training that supports the resident experience (e.g. Gentle Persuasive Approach)
- Other duties assigned by management
Qualifications
- High school completion or equivalent required
- Current Food Handlers Certification in accordance with Public Health required
- 1 year previous experience in an institutional, healthcare, restaurant, or hospitality food service environment; or a combination of a Food Service Worker Certificate and experience is preferred
- Previous experience working with the elderly is an asset
- Good knowledge of general food service equipment, sanitation
- Ability to organize time, set priorities and to multitask in order to meet various competing work and deadlines.
- Knowledge of Kashruth laws and practices is an asset
- Sensitivity to cultural needs
- Demonstrated customer service skills
- Effective oral and written communication skills in English
- Ability to effectively work independently and as part of a team
