Job Summary

We are currently looking for clinical Externs for each of our following units:

 

Inpatient Psychiatry Unit (4 East) provides assessment and short-term management of mental health issues, by an interdisciplinary team, for adults over the age of 65. The major focus of the unit is on complex individuals who have been diagnosed with a mental illness and have comorbid medical diagnoses such as Parkinson’s disease.

 

Behavioral Neurology Unit (4 West) is a short stay secure inpatient unit for adults with neurologic complexities. It offers a specialized interdisciplinary service that focuses on diagnosis, assessment and treatment of complex neurological diseases and associated behavioural symptoms. The overall goal is to enhance the wellbeing of the client and improve their quality of life.

 

Complex Continuing Care Unit (5 West and 6 East) provides care for older adults with complex medical conditions in a non-acute hospital setting. The Complex Continuing Care program helps patients and their families identify and implement strategies that support quality-of-life goals as well as short term and long-term care needs.

 

Palliative Care Unit (6 West) provides 24-hour pain and symptom management combined with emotional and spiritual support to patients with late or end-stage malignant and non-malignant disease in need of palliative care. We offer a 31-bed unit with beds reserved for short-term palliative applicants with a 90 day or less prognosis and long-stay palliative applicants.

 

High Tolerance Rehabilitation Unit (7 West) is for patients requiring therapy as a result of musculoskeletal conditions. The purpose is to help patients attain maximum physical and functional goals, while addressing emotional, social and spiritual needs to help them return to living in the community as independently as possible.

 

Key Responsibilities

  • Participates in patient assessments and activities of daily living
  • Contributes to care planning and evaluation
  • Provides assistance with lifting, turning, transferring, transporting and ambulating as per the hospital policy
  • Provides measures to ensure skin integrity and reduce pressure injuries
  • Assists with comfort measures and patient safety by ensuring the environment is clean and tidy and free of hazards
  • Communicates care (documentation/report)
  • Engages in additional skills via delegation as approved by unit leadership
  • As applicable, provides assigned care, under supervision, where they have the knowledge, skill and judgement to do safely, excluding controlled acts
  • Supports patients’ independence, dignity, social, emotional and cultural well - being
  • Initiates and maintains a relationship with the client, their family and other care providers

 

Qualifications

  • Nursing Students enrolled in their 2nd, 3rd, or 4th year of a CNO approved baccalaureate program or 2nd year of a diploma nursing program
  • Demonstrated evidence of excellent academic standing
  • Current certificate in Basic Cardiac Life Support required
  • Demonstrated infection prevention and control practices
  • Students who have successfully completed a recent clinical placement preferred
  • Ability to work independently and as part of the interdisciplinary team and recognize when to escalate challenging situations
  • Experience working with clients with cognitive impairment/dementia and experience working with clients who exhibit high intensity responsive behaviours preferred
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication and problem-solving skills
  • Basic computer skills – Meditech, Microsoft Word and Excel preferred

 

Compensation

The pay rate for this position is $20.60 per hour. 

Your placement within the target hiring range will depend on your job-related knowledge, skills, abilities, and relevant education and experience, as well as considerations such as market conditions and internal equity. The starting salary will be determined using these factors to ensure fairness and consistency across the organization.
