Position Information:

Classroom/lab/shop observation is one component of the full-time and contract faculty performance review system at Durham College.  It is designed to improve student outcomes by providing formative feedback on faculty performance.  Class observers review the content and delivery of a course lesson and, using a college-approved template, provide feedback that both acknowledges strengths and suggests areas for further professional development.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Schedule mutually agreeable observation dates and times with faculty;
  • Review class/lab/shop lesson plan and/or faculty-provided materials in advance of the classroom observation, as appropriate;
  • Utilize principles of adult teaching and learning to conduct classroom observations (either virtually or in-person) as assigned by the Executive Dean, Dean or Associate Dean;
  • Record objective observations of demonstrated faculty teaching skills and abilities using the prescribed Classroom Observation Form;
  • Submit the Classroom Observation Form to the appropriate Executive Dean, Dean or Associate Dean according to agreed-upon deadlines;
  • Be available to the Executive Dean, Dean or Associate Dean for clarification of feedback, as needed;
  • Utilize technology (video-conferencing, learning management system, educational technology tools etc.) as appropriate to facilitate observation of lesson;
  • Maintain confidentiality and privacy through adherence to the College’s record retention and destruction protocols;
  • Participate in training or other activities with the Centre for Teaching and Learning, as directed.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Possess a master’s degree in the field of education and/or equivalent industry-related certifications;
  2. Minimum of five years of recent experience teaching in a post-secondary environment;
  3. Demonstrated knowledge of teaching and learning methodologies and andragogies appropriate for adult learning, including Universal Design for Learning and AODA standards;
  4. Familiar with the college’s learning management system, as well as other educational technologies;
  5. Experience using video conferencing platforms, such as Zoom and Microsoft Teams;
  6. Awareness of Durham College academic policies and procedures;
  7. Able to respect confidentiality and privacy;
  8. Strong written and verbal communication skills;
  9. Effective time management, organizational and interpersonal skills; and
  10. Able to work independently, and with a flexible schedule. 

Required Skills

Hourly Rate: $40.00


Required Experience

These are part-time, casual positions.  Working hours are variable, and may be scheduled between 8 am and 9 pm, Monday – Friday, and between 8 am and 5 pm, Saturday - Sunday.
