Durham College is seeking an experienced and motivated professional who shares our commitment to quality and student success. The Academic Upgrading Department within the Faculty of Liberal Studies requires a part-time professor to teach ACE Core Math. This introductory course is designed to give students a grounding in varied aspects of mathematics, including Cartesian graphing; solving linear systems; collecting, displaying and analyzing data; mathematical measurement; percentages and proportions; algebraic techniques; and geometry.

IMPORTANT NOTE FOR ACADEMIC UPGRADING PART-TIME FACULTY APPLICANTS: 

Adults entering the upgrading program will be applying to a wide variety of skills training and postsecondary programs or they will be re-entering the workplace. The ACE Core Math course is designed to work as an equivalent for MEL4E for admission requirements and/or as a pre-requisite for ACEA 3002 (ACE Apprenticeship Math). This course offers information, detailed instruction, and practice in a broad range of mathematic skills equivalent to those taught in Ontario high school college level mathematics courses. Upon completion of the course, students will advance to the level required to meet workplace demands and for chosen post-secondary Technology, Apprenticeship, Skills, Business, or Health Science programs. 

The summer semester begins the week of May 6th, 2024. Part-time faculty teach up to 6 hours per week with varied schedules Monday through Friday between 8:00 am and 4:00 pm. 

The responsibilities of Durham College Part-time Professors include, but are not limited to:

  1. Creating a positive learning environment that accommodates students’ diverse cultural and educational backgrounds, experiences, and individual learning styles;
  2. Utilizing principles of adult education to actively engage students in the learning process;
  3. Effectively using educational technologies to support learning, manage and post grades, and deliver hybrid and on-line courses;
  4. Developing curriculum that uses appropriate strategies and tools to assess student learning;
  5. Ensuring that course and program curriculum is current and relevant;
  6. Working independently and demonstrating initiative; and
  7. Working effectively with students, the program team, and a variety of internal and external stakeholders.

The ideal candidate will meet or exceed the following qualifications:

  1. A professional designation is an asset.
  2. A minimum of five years of recent (within the past three years) and relevant work experience.
  3. Teaching experience at the post-secondary level with a demonstrated understanding and application of UDL and current assessment methodologies.
  4. Experience participating in industry-led or community-based applied research is an asset.
  5. Demonstrated commitment to putting the student experience first.
  6. Demonstrated use of current technologies to support student learning and the management of grades.
  7. Proven track record of life-long learning.
  8. Demonstrated ability to work effectively with a variety of internal and external stakeholders including students, faculty, support staff, administrators and community stakeholders.
  9. Understanding of the Ontario college system.
