ROLE
The RPN in the Dialysis Unit, in collaboration with the RN, is responsible for the comprehensive, coordinated and individualized care of patients with chronic kidney disease requiring hemodialysis treatments. The RPN is an active member of the multidisciplinary team that provides care to the patient and support to their family.
- Performs nursing interventions such as taking vital signs, applying aseptic techniques including sterile dressing, ensuring infection control, monitoring nutritional intake and conducting specimen collection.
- Administers medication, observing and documenting therapeutic effects.
- Coordinates hemodialysis machine setup and priming of dialyser according to established procedures.
- Assesses and documents on stable patients pre-dialysis as per established procedures.
- Assists with weighing and wheelchair/stretcher transfers pre and post dialysis.
- Monitors patients during the hemodialysis treatment Monitors patients’ conditions (Blood Pressure, subjective findings) and reports any change in patient conditions immediately to the Registered Nurse.
- Prepares setups for the next shift of patients.
- Restocks supplies at patient stations and on the machines.
- Dismantles, cleans and disinfects dialysis equipment at the end of the dialysis treatment.
- Assesses and documents on stable patients post dialysis.
- Reports patients’ conditions post dialysis to the Registered Nurse who will discharge patients from the unit.
- Assists with pressure application following cannula removal following dialysis when required.
- Participates as a member of the multidisciplinary team and promotes effective liaisons between patient, family and physician, and other health team members and community agencies; encourages referrals to appropriate community resources
REQUIRED, EDUCATION & CERTIFICATION(S)
- Current registration with the Ontario College of Nurses in good standing
- CPR
- IV certification
REQUIRED SKILLS & EXPERIENCE(S)
- Minimum two (2) years experience in Acute Care nursing, with on-the-job training or exposure to nephrology or dialysis settings preferred

Demonstrated excellent oral and written communication, collaborative and interpersonal skills.
- Proficiency in operating and maintaining dialysis equipment
- Familiarity with patient education and the ability to teach patients and families about disease management
- History of maintaining a safe and therapeutic environment for patients.
- Ability to work independently and in a team setting.
- Ability to organize, prioritize and function well under stress and crisis situations.
DESIRED SKILLS, EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION
- Experience performing the RPN Advanced Practice skills related to hemodialysis. Education will be provided by the Regional Kidney Care Program Simcoe Muskoka in Orillia prior to work on the unit.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
Location: Huntsville District Memorial Hospital (HDMH) located in Huntsville. Applicants must reside within 125km of one of our hospital campuses or be willing to relocate prior to starting. *Exceptions will be considered on a case-by-case basis
Hours of Work: Must be available to work shifts including days, evenings, nights and weekends. Shifts and hours may change according to departmental requirements per the collective agreement.
